A fiery drama has taken place on a Geelong street named for TV hit Game of Thrones, with a homeowner’s new castle badly damaged after going up in flames.

The fire, on Greyjoy Rd in Charlemont, is believed to have been caused by “on-site works”.

Greyjoy Rd was one of several in the estate named for the hit fantasy books and TV series in a move that caused a stir in 2017.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 7.45am Thursday after multiple calls to triple-0.

A CFA spokesman said crews arrived to find the garage of the house engulfed by flames.

“The fire spread into the roof space but the rest of the house was saved by firefighters,” the spokeswoman said.

Neighbours reported seeing flames coming out the property.

Grovedale firefighters said the blaze was not being treated as suspicious and was caused by “on-site works”.

It is understood the owner was working on his home, which was under construction, when the fire broke out.

The property is in a development area in Charlemont, with neighbouring land being prepared for new homes to be built.

In 2017, the developer of the site was forced to change the name of Lannaster Rd after a complaint from a neighbouring estate in the Armstrong Creek growth area.

Project manager Gary Smith said he had to change the name to Precinct Rd after the complaint because the planned name made reference to a brother and sister in the series, Cersei and Jaime Lannister, who were romantically involved.

“They objected to that fact that it had a reference to incest … it’s a fictional series,” Mr Smith said. He said he had even changed the spelling from Lannister to Lannaster to not make it as obvious.

Other street names in the estate inspired by characters and locations in Game of Thrones remained unchanged.

They include Catelyn Rd, Stannis St, Winterfell Rd, Greyjoy Rd, Baelish Drive and Tywin St.
