The second round of university offers has been released and for thousands of recent high school graduates it finally means they can start making plans for the year ahead.

The latest offers, released Friday afternoon, follow the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre’s (VTAC) first round on December 23.

Akeira Murnane, 17, was one of thousands of local students to receive a university offer in the first round and said she could relate to the nerves many felt on Friday.

The 17-year-old from Teesdale graduated from Clonard College and after receiving a lower than expected ATAR of 67, she didn’t expect to be accepted into her “dream course” – Aerospace Engineering and Aviation at RMIT.

“I’d felt devastated by my ATAR,” she said.

“Both me and my mum cried as soon as we saw it (the offer) … it was it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders.”

A year earlier, the course didn’t accept anyone with an ATAR below 80.

Akeira plans to travel this year and commence her four-year degree in 2026, after which she wants to work in space ship and rocket design.

Fellow Clonard graduate Antonella Trogrlic was accepted into Deakin University’s Bachelor in Vision Science and Optometry.

She said she was so shocked when she received the offer in December, she fell down the stairs.

“I didn’t quite meet the ATAR I wanted … I was very, very shocked,” she said.

At Deakin, nursing was the most popular course by number of offers in VTAC’s second offer round, closely followed by science and then exercise and sport science.

Biomedical science and education were next, followed by health sciences and architecture.

Law, commerce and criminology rounded out the Geelong campuses top 10 most popular courses for the second round offers.

In total, 455 offers were made by Deakin for Geelong campuses in this round.

Further study offers will be made on January 28 and February 4, with many institutions also offering varied pathways into courses.

Deakin’s Liz Johnson said university offers was an exciting time for school leavers as they looked to take the next step in their education journeys.

Professor Johnson said there were also several ways school leavers could get into their dream course at Deakin if they did not receive a VTAC offer they were hoping for.

“One option is you could complete a bridging course at Deakin, or diplomas are another common pathway,” she said.
