A probe has been launched into a major crash near Avalon that caused major delays and banked up traffic for over six kilometres.
Two people are in hospital following the smash, near the intersection with Beach Rd on the Princes Freeway.
Emergency services first responded at around 11.25am on Thursday, with one person initially trapped for more than an hour.
A man and a woman have since been taken to Geelong hospital and are being treated for minor injuries.
Geelong bound motorists were being told to allow extra time at 2pm, with delays exceeding one hour being experienced on the freeway.
The road remains open.
Earlier reports suggested traffic was banked as far back as Werribee.
Ambulance Victoria assessed patients at the scene following the collision.
It’s understood two cars, a white Haval and a white Toyota Camry, were involved in the crash.
The Haval could be seen stuck over the railing facing back into traffic, while the Toyota remained facing forward with significant damage.
Motorists are encouraged to follow the direction of emergency crews.
Victoria Police is investigating.
