Firefighters had to extract a man from his car after he smashed into a tree in Geelong West on Friday.

North-bound lanes on Melbourne Rd in Geelong West were closed following the crash shortly after noon on Friday.

The lanes are closed between Gordon Ave and Church St, while traffic on south-bound lanes is moving slowly.

The incident occurred near Mont Albert Rd and the road was wet after heavy morning rain across Geelong.

A Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) spokesman said firefighters arrived on scene within seven minutes of reports to triple-0 to find a single vehicle collision with a tree and one person trapped.

“FRV and CFA attended, and the scene was deemed under control at 12.20pm,” he said.

“Firefighters extricated the person about 12.40pm and handed the patient to Ambulance Victoria.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to a collision in Geelong about 12.10pm.

“A man in his 40s believed to have an upper body injury was transported by road ambulance to University Hospital Geelong in a stable condition,” she said.

Debris from the wreckage could be seen on the median strip.

Victoria Police is diverting drivers via Pakington St and drivers are encouraged to consider Shannon Ave or the Geelong Ring Rd.
