A Bellarine couple is looking forward to “taking the pedal off the metal” and enjoying life more after ringing in the New Year with a $4.8m win on Monday night.

The couple purchased their lottery ticket at Drysdale Newsagency, only to discover it was the sole division one winning entry in the country.

Now, they will be taking home $4.8m in instalments of $20,000 a month for the next two decades.

The couple said they hadn’t slept since the news.

“We’re still looking at each other thinking, ‘this doesn’t happen to people like us’,” the winning woman said.

“My husband checked the ticket as we were about to head to bed last night.

“We don’t always buy a Set for Life ticket, maybe once or twice a month. And I usually check it in the morning.

“So my husband checked it, and he said, ‘darl, darl, darl … I think we’ve won’.

“I told him to put his glasses on, but then we read the numbers out, and they were all there.”

The couple’s mortgage will be squared off and they’ll be able to “take the pedal off the medal a bit”.

“We both love our work and will continue to work, but we can just take a bit more time to enjoy life,” the woman said.

It’s not the first time Drysdale Newsagency has sold a winning ticket.

In July, a Drysdale woman won $100,000 on the scratchies.

That same month, a Lara man won $12m after taking home to the top Powerball prize and a Geelong man won almost $1m.

A month later in August a Leopold couple were mulling plans for a dream beach house after a $2.5m Tattslotto win.

In January, a Geelong woman also won a Set for Life jackpot, meaning she will receive $20,000 a month for 20 years.

More recently, a Belmont father-daughter duo pocketed more than $660,000 in a Tattslotto draw in September.
