Fresh details have emerged over a serious head-on smash involving a Geelong Cats star that hospitalised four people and landed him in court.
Midfielder Tom Atkins, 29, will appear in the Geelong Magistrates Court on December 5 for his alleged involvement in a major three-vehicle collision in Wallington last year.
It is alleged his vehicle veered onto the wrong side of Grubb Rd about 7.30pm on August 9, sparking a police probe.
Leading Senior Constable Kendra Jackson confirmed multiple emergency services responded to the incident and four people were taken to hospital.
Atkins, who has played 127 games for the Cats, including their 2022 premiership, has been charged with careless driving and failing to keep left of a dividing line.
Sources told this masthead the crash had taken a serious mental toll on some of the victims. All those involved suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed the incident but was unable to provide any further details due to patient privacy regulations.
Atkins and his management have been contacted for comment.
A Cats spokeswoman told the Geelong Advertiser on Friday the club was aware of his upcoming court appearance “in relation to a traffic offence”.
There is no suggestion that alcohol or illicit substances were involved.
It is still unclear whether the AFL Integrity Unit has investigated the allegations.
The unit has been contacted for comment.
Atkins is an integral part of the Geelong midfield and has become a popular fan favourite since making his debut in 2019.
He enjoyed a career-best season in the Cats’ 2022 flag year and is contracted until the end of 2025.
