The sister of a Lara man who has been missing for more than three weeks has made a desperate plea for her brother to come home.

Daniel Carmody, 53, was last seen leaving his home on Curletts Rd about 8am on June 26, wearing a black hooded jumper, black trackpants and vibrant blue sneakers.

His sister, Isobella Carmody, spent Monday night driving around Lara in the dark looking for her younger brother.

She said he has a medical condition and lives in “dreadful fear of almost everything”.

Mr Carmody is caucasian, of slim build and is bald with a short, grey beard and is known to frequent the Geelong and Lara areas as well as the Melbourne CBD.

Ms Carmody believes her brother may have disappeared after he received a phone call from a friend informing him another friend, a younger woman, had died suddenly.

“It played into the fears he has ... I think he was frightened,” she said.

Acting Senior Sergeant Paul O’Connell said there has been previous occasions where Mr Carmody had gone missing, however those were for significantly shorter periods of time.

Ms Carmody said her brother tends to “go when he is afraid”.

“But usually he calls our mum from phone booths because you can make those calls for free and he remembers our mum’s number,” she said.

Sergeant O’Connell said there had been multiple unconfirmed sightings of Mr Carmody, with the most recent in Lara on Tuesday.

“Over the last month or so, police have followed up numerous potential sightings of Daniel in the Melbourne CBD and South Melbourne area,” he said.

“It’s my understanding his predominant use of transport is V/Line trains and he gets around on foot.

“We are significantly concerned about his welfare.”

Ms Carmody said her brother may be sleeping rough, because he had no access to money, and might not be recognisable with “just a side glance”.

Police said he left his home with only $20 in cash and no phone or bank card.

“You would really have to look at him to know who he is,” Ms Carmody said.

She said her brother previously owned a business in Brunwick St in Melbourne and raised money for animal welfare.

“He is a very smart man,” she said.

“(But) a person who doesn’t want to be found, who is frightened, can hide very successfully.”

She urged her brother to call their mother and let them know he is safe.

“Even if (you) doesn’t want to say where (you) are, at least call,” she said.

“Nothing bad that is going to happen.

“We will look after you ... please come home.”

Anyone who sees Mr Carmody is urged to contact Corio police station of 5273 9555.
