An aspiring lawyer who drove 150km/h on the Princes Freeway because his wife had period pain has fronted court for overtaking an unmarked police car as part of his dangerous driving.

Chamkaur Singh, 35, previously worked as a practising lawyer in India and is currently studying a Bachelor of Laws.

The Lara man pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday.

Earlier this year, Singh was driving on the Princes Freeway in Lara and overtook an unmarked police vehicle at a high speed.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Andrew Clapham said Singh was seen by police overtaking a number of cars on the freeway in the course of his offending.

The court heard Singh, who also works as a truck driver, had been recorded by police driving 152km/h in a 100km/h zone.

When Singh was pulled over by police and questioned about his speeding, he said it was because his wife was experiencing period pain.

Singh’s lawyer said her client was driving “fast and dangerous” and was putting the community at risk with his driving and was aware he shouldn’t have been driving that fast.

Magistrate Franz Holder said the speed Singh was travelling at was “far too high”.

“It places people at risk. It doesn’t matter if police are around, it doesn’t matter if it’s an ordinary citizen, going about their job, it puts everybody on the roads in your vicinity at risk.

“It is well over the speed limit and I’m sure that you knew that at the time”, Mr Holzer said.

Singh was convicted and fined $2000 and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
