A three-week-old kitten has been rescued after it was found in a stormwater drain in Armstrong Creek.
Country Fire Authority (CFA) crews were responding to a fire alarm at Warralily Shopping Centre on Barwon Heads Rd on November 28 when a man told them he could hear meows coming from the drain.
CFA volunteer Edward Atkin went over to investigate and heard the kitten, which had potentially been dumped there intentionally, crying out.
“We called it in on the radio and got a truck back (to the scene),” the 18-year-old said.
“We cut the council lock and climbed down the drain to rescue the kitten.
“It’s one of those calls that gets you emotional … I have a cat at home that looks basically the same.”
Mr Atkin said saving the kitten, which was a little wet and cold, from the drain was a rewarding job.
“It is definitely rewarding to know that we helped get this little guy out and that it was all good,” he said.
“It was a great team effort from everyone and a good outcome.”
The kitten, now named Stormy, was taken in by foster carer Kate Marshall but it’s not confirmed if it's a male or female.
It’s not known how Stormy ended up in the drain but it’s believed it may have been dumped.
“A three-week-old kitten couldn’t get down there itself,” Ms Marshall said.
“We don’t know if the rest of the litter were down there and were swept away or where if the mother was there too.”
Ms Marshall said Stormy was recovering well from the ordeal.
“We’ve taken Stormy to the vet recently and it was checked over and it is doing really well,” she said.
“It’s running around after the other kittens now … it follows me around too because it knows I have the bottles of milk.”
Ms Marshall, who has been volunteering and fostering cats for about nine years with Geelong Animal Rescue, urged cat owners to desex their pets.
