Internationally acclaimed French chef Gabriel Gaté says he feels at home at his holiday pad in Queenscliff.
Gaté, who has featured on a several cooking shows and authored 23 cookbooks, has owned the property for 18 years.
He comes down from Melbourne to the Bellarine region at least once a month, or as often as he can, with his wife Angie.
“We usually come for long weekends,” Gaté said.
“We love the area.”
He said the Bellarine was a “beautiful” part of the world as it was not too busy and had a lovely climate.
“It’s not too cold in winter and not too hot in summer,” Gaté said.
“The food is wonderful.”
Gaté said he enjoyed visiting the cafes and restaurants in the region including Ket Baker in Wallington, Jack Rabbit Winery, and Tulip in Geelong West.
“There are a great selection of restaurants, wineries and bakeries,” he said.
Gaté grows a number of fruit trees at his Queenscliff home including fig, nectarine, lemon and olive.
He also grows a variety of herbs like parsley, mint and rosemary.
“I don’t grow too many vegetables because I’m not here enough to water them,” he said.
Gaté has been a chef for 53 years and moved to Australia in 1977 after meeting his wife in Paris, who was studying French and was originally from Victoria.
He is hosting a French gourmet culinary cruise experience in June 2025 along the Seine River in the country’s north.
“There are a lot of chateaus and medieval villages along the river,” Gaté said.
“It’s cultural and it’s beautiful food, wine and stories.
“We will also enjoy a lunch at my niece’s dairy farm in Normandy.”
