A Bellarine cricketer and former club president has been charged with aggravated burglary.
Brett Rory Venables, 35, appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court accused of the serious allegation and other charges last week.
Mr Venables is a five-time premiership-winning cricketer in the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association and had been the president of Anglesea Cricket Club.
His matter was adjourned for a committal mention on October 7, where his defence counsel will receive a brief of evidence including copies of any statements and exhibits in relation to the charges against him.
The hearing is commonly used for a magistrate to decide whether an accused should be committed to stand trial at a higher court, or if any or all or the charges can be heard and finalised in the magistrates court.
Mr Venables stepped down as the Anglesea president midway through last season.
This masthead is not suggesting the decision is related to his alleged criminal offending.
He played his final game for the Roos in early February in the club’s second grade.
The well-known sportsman was a key part of four consecutive A1 premierships with the club between 2020 and 2023, also playing in another title in 2018.
He has recently been playing football with Horsham Saints in the Wimmera Football Netball League.
