Budget airline Bonza is set to start flying between the Gold Coast and Avalon.

Starting fares for the Gold Coast will range from $49 to $79 per person one way, and it’s understood flights are expected to start in time for Christmas.

The airline established its first Avalon route, to the Sunshine Coast, earlier this year, and its first flight at the Lara airport touched down in February.

Jetstar also flies the Avalon-Gold Coast route.

Bonza announced the second Avalon route with the news it would operate flights from the popular holiday spot to 11 existing Bonza destinations.

Subject to regulatory approval, Bonza will operate two aircraft from Gold Coast Airport in time for summer holidays.

Flights will be on sale soon through the airline’s app.

Bonza chief executive Tim Jordan said the announcement was about creating more depth in the network by connecting existing Bonza destinations with the Gold Coast and Northern NSW.

“It is a huge boost for the economy and allows people in our existing destinations the opportunity to book an affordable flight to Gold Coast Airport and take a much-deserved holiday or long-awaited visit to friends and family,” Mr Jordan said.

Initially, Bonza will partner with an airline “wet lease” provider to enable families to holiday and connect with each other over Christmas and peak school holidays.

Bonza recently culled a number of routes from its schedule, but Avalon received an additional weekly Sunshine Coast flight amid high demand.

The airline started flying in January.

Avalon Airport chief executive Tony Brun said the new Gold Coast flights were testament to the demand in our region to travel from Avalon.

“Avalon Airport is committed to driving capacity, choice and competition for airlines and passengers and this once again solidifies our position and need to be supported as Victoria and Melbourne’s secondary domestic and international airport,” he said.

Jetstar said it currently operated one return flight a day between Avalon and the Gold Coast and was committed to this popular route.

“While we’re always looking for opportunities to expand our network and offer more low fares, we don’t have any announcements to make about new flights from Avalon,” the spokesperson said.
