Barwon Prison inmate Jack Hall has prison term extended after brutal jail yard assault

A Geelong man involved in a sickening jail yard attack that left an inmate fighting for life with multiple puncture wounds to his back and abdomen has had his stint behind bars extended, a court has heard.
Jack Hall, 23, pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence at the Supreme Court of Victoria over an attack at Barwon Prison on August 14, 2020.
Court documents show how Hall and fellow inmate, Daniel Condon, enticed Derek Collett down a garden path inside the Ilawarra unit of the maximum security jail before the vicious assault.
A sharpened metal dinner knife was used by Condon to stab Collett nine times to the lower back, upper back, flank and abdomen.
“Meanwhile, you kicked, punched and stomped on Derek (Collett) multiple times, including stomping on his head,” Judge Jane Dixon told the court at sentencing on March 27.
“At the end of the assault, one of you stomped on his right hand and said, ‘Stay down, you dog, and die’.”
Collett was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital by air ambulance and underwent emergency surgery.
A victim impact statement showed “there is no doubt that, without the surgical and interventional procedures, Derek (Collett) would have died from his injuries.”
The incident lasted for 16 seconds and was captured by nearby CCTV cameras.
Judge Dixon sentenced Hall to a further three years in jail with a non-parole period lasting until March 2026.
Hall was in Barwon Prison awaiting sentence for a string of offences across Geelong in March 2020, including driving at police officers, taunting them and ramming police cars.
“If you are not granted parole you will have served most of your twenties in prison for the combined offending arising from the Geelong offences committed in March 2020 and the current offence committed in August 2020,” Judge Dixon said.
Hall was sentenced to four years jail in November 2021 for the Geelong spree after pleading guilty to offences including car theft, possessing a gun and ammunition, placing police officers at risk of injury and driving at a police officer.
