A Corio man who allegedly threatened to kill a woman’s puppy in Armstrong Creek before kicking and breaking her door, was taken down by a group of young men in a dramatic citizens’ arrest.

Ashley Campbell, 34, was in a “frantic state” when he allegedly threatened to kill the woman’s pet on January 27, and is alleged to have also pulled her hair in an attempt to force her out of her home, the Geelong Magistrates Court heard.

The court was told Mr Campbell had driven to the woman’s house on his motorcycle and had parked across the street.

It is alleged Mr Campbell tried to call the woman and shouted at her because she would not let him inside her home. The woman rang her ex-partner, who then arrived at the scene.

Court documents allege Mr Campbell threatened to fight the ex-partner and she told her ex that he should leave in case something happened to him.

When the ex-partner left, Mr Campbell allegedly revved his motorcycle in the woman’s driveway while she was on the phone to police and he did a burnout.

Police arrived at the scene and spoke to Mr Campbell who said he just wanted to talk to the woman.

Officers left the address at 9pm and five minutes later Mr Campbell allegedly began banging on the front door shouting “Open the door, I love you, please let me in.”

The court was told Mr Campbell allegedly pounded on the door with his fist in an aggressive mannner and yelled “f---ing let me in” and “who are you with”.

It is alleged Mr Campbell kicked the front door with such force that the lock broke and the door swung open.

The woman told the court she was fearful for her puppy and tried to protect her pet when the after the door was breach.

According to court documents, Mr Campbell swung his elbow, which hit the woman in the mouth, grabbed a hold of her hair and backed towards the front door dragging her outside.

A few moments later police arrived at the scene again and Mr Campbell allegedly tried to run from the officers and was tackled by a group of young men in their early 20s, who performed a citizens’ arrest.

The young men were having a few drinks on the night of the alleged incident and observed a man yelling before they went outside to see what was happening.

Police took Mr Campbell to the Geelong police station, where he told police he went to the woman’s house after work as he wanted to be told “everything’s all right”.

“I didn’t touch her, I didn’t assault her, I didn’t do nothing,” Mr Campbell told police.

When he was shown a photo of the damage to the door, he said “I just knocked on the door and I asked what is she doing. The doors opened up. I don’t know, it just swung open.”

Mr Campbell is charged with aggravated burglary, unlawful assault and intentionally damaging property.

Mr Campbell will appear in the County Court on September 4 for a trial. No application for bail was made.
