Emergency services respond to two-vehicle crash on Portarlington Rd

A teenage girl and a woman are in hospital after a car crash at a notorious intersection near Portarlington.

A teenage girl and a woman are in hospital after a car crash at a notorious intersection near Portarlington.

Police and paramedics were called to the corner of Batman and Portarlington roads about 3.15pm on Tuesday.

The intersection, which also takes in Point Richards Rd, has long frustrated residents living in the Bellarine Peninsula town who have described it as “an accident waiting to happen”.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said a teenage girl with a suspected upper body injury was rushed to Geelong Hospital, joining another woman, in her 50s, already in hospital with similar injuries.

Both were in a stable condition as of Tuesday evening.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said early reports indicated it was a two vehicle collision, with motorists experiencing major delays as a result.

It comes after a 65-year-old Portarlington woman was killed at the same intersection in January last year.

Jill Collins died when her car collided with another along the dangerous stretch.

Four people from the other vehicle, including an eight-week-old baby and a two-year-old girl, were also taken to hospital.

Residents near the crash site said at the time they were concerned if plans to build a multimillion dollar chocolate factory at the intersection were approved, the road would become worse.

The Bellarine Chocolate Co was set to include a chocolaterie, restaurant, 12 farm stay cabins, children’s farm, berry gardens and an apple orchard on a 234,000sq m plot of land on Point Richards Road.

In December, the project was rejected by Geelong council’s planning committee.

In April this year, local Sue Cairns said a roundabout or traffic lights should be implemented to increase safety after additional turning lanes were introduced to accommodate more than 300 houses expected to be built at a new estate.
