Bellarine Football Netball League: Captains’ predictions for 2022 netball season

The season is around the corner and teams are putting in their final training sessions ahead of the netball season. Find out each captain’s predictions ahead of round one.

OCEAN Grove’s Kelsey Ollis has been tipped to take out the BFNL’s top award, with four captains voting for her in the annual captains’ survey at this week’s season launch.

She was the only multiple vote getter for the award.

Geelong Amateur dominated the remainder of the survey, with six captains seeing it as a grand final fancy for this season.

Torquay and Ocean Grove were the only other sides to receive a vote.

Four sides seem destined for finals action, the Ammos (six votes), along with Ocean Grove (eight), Torquay (eight) and Barwon Heads (five) all tipped to make this season’s finals series.

Modewarre was next in line with four votes, Drysdale and Queenscliff rounding out the vote getters with three and one vote respectively.
The good news continued for the Ammos, with star shooter Ruby Watson tipped to lead the league in goals scored, with seven captains voting for her.

She was the only multiple vote getter for the award.

Round one begins this weekend with Barwon Heads hosting Drysdale, Geelong Amateur facing Portarlington, Queenscliff taking on Newcomb, Ocean Grove battling Torquay and Modewarre hosting Anglesea.

East Geelong tipped to play in GDFNL decider

East Geelong is the favourite among GDFL netball captains to make this season’s grand final, receiving six votes in the annual captains’ survey at Wednesday night’s season launch.

Thomson came in next with three.

East Geelong shared 10 votes to make the finals with Thomson and Werribee Centrals, the three sides overwhelming favourites to take up three of the five finals positions.

Winchelsea and Bannockburn came in next with three each, while Corio, North Geelong and Inverleigh rounded out the picks with two a-piece.

Thomson’s star shooter Emma Witham claimed the most votes to win the competition’s best and fairest and leading goal shooter awards with two.

She shared the leading goal shooter honours with East Geelong’s Shannon Pietsch and North Geelong’s Cassidy Nelson.

Round one kicks off this weekend with East Geelong taking on Belmont, Inverleigh hosting Werribee Centrals, Corio battling North Geelong, Thomson facing Bell Post Hull, Geelong West Giants hosting Bannockburn and Anakie taking on Winchelsea on Sunday.

GFNL captains make calls on 2022 grand finalists and key awards

Newtown & Chilwell’s Julia Wooley is expected to have a strong season on the court after polling well at the Geelong Football Netball League’s season launch.

In a captain’s vote on the season’s predictions, seven of the league’s captains voted for the goal attack to lead the competition for scoring.

Grace Parker received three votes to be the leading scorer, and Alisha McDonald also polled two votes.

Newtown & Chilwell, who has dominated the GFNL in recent history, is expected to continue its reign of success.

The side received seven votes to make it to the grand final, with South Barwon the only other side to poll multiple votes.

Newtown & Chilwell also received a full complement of votes to make the top five.

Geelong West received eight votes, St Albans and St Joseph’s got five each, while St Mary’s, South Barwon and Bell Park received four each.

The race for the best player in the competition is wide open, with South Barwon’s Olivia Cameron, and Lara’s Elizabeth Johnstone received two votes each.

Grovedale’s Bonnie Coburn, Colac’s Brooke Allan and Ellie Kennedy also polled twice for the best player honour.
