The Government of South Australia has delivered the fastest-growing economy in the nation and a record number of full-time jobs, creating demand for skilled workers in industries such as IT, building and construction, aged care and defence. Getting people into apprenticeships and traineeships are key to placing the right people in the right jobs.

Offered on both a full-time and part-time basis for people of all ages, from current students and school leavers to existing workers looking for a career change, apprenticeships and traineeships support people to learn real skills in real workplaces and be paid while learning.

“One of the great things is apprenticeships and traineeships give you that real-world, hands-on experience and the ability to earn while you’re in training for your particular skill,” said Renee Hindmarsh, South Australian Skills Commissioner. “You have the benefit of having close supervision while you’re undertaking your training, so while you’re learning on the job it’s in a very safe and supportive environment. And the employment outcomes for people who undertake an apprenticeship are really good.”

For younger students, school-based apprenticeships provide a basis to start building industry relevant skills and can even count towards the SACE.

One of the sectors with the highest demand for skilled employees is aged care and disability support.

“There are so many opportunities in the care sector and it is an incredibly rewarding career,” Ms Hindmarsh said.

“Our trainee of the year at the 2021 South Australian Training Awards was a young man who was working for disability support provider Cara. He found it suited his personality and he loved the lifestyle and the job.”
