A feast for the senses

South Australia is living up to its billing as the nation’s Festival State, with music, food, wine, arts and culture still to come – and everyone is welcome.

The Festival State is in full Bloom. South Australia’s inaugural celebration of springtime events and festivals continues to flower, with locals and visitors alike soaking up some of the best the state has to offer.

From a visual celebration of Indigenous art to the festival for the curious that is Barossa Contemporary; from the harmony of the Feast Festival to the thrills of the Shannons Adelaide Rally, there is still plenty to entrance and excite.

And Bloom, a collection of amazing events, has already kicked off South Australia’s events calendar. This year’s Adelaide Fringe will be held from February 18-March 22, stretching from Whyalla in the state’s north down to Naracoorte on the south-east coast and everywhere in between, offering a range of eclectic and vibrant events including cabaret, theatre, comedy, circus, music, visual arts, workshops and more. The event – the world’s second-largest after the Edinburgh Fringe – has drawn millions of interstate and international visitors to South Australia in its more-than-50-year history, with almost 3 million people enjoying 31 magical summer days and nights in 2021.

The Adelaide Festival and WOMADelaide are also major drawcards to the state. This year’s Festival runs from March 4-20, with a program that features both Australian and international artists in more than 70 events, including a free opening event from the internationally acclaimed acrobatic company Gravity and Other Myths. Meanwhile, Adelaide’s iconic open-air festival, WOMADelaide, will showcase more than 100 performances as well as workshops, children’s activities and more. For food lovers, Tasting Australia presented by RAA Travel is on the menu from April 29-May 8. The 10-day festival celebrates local food, drink, produce and producers, with last year’s event showcasing more than 40 local and national chefs, winemakers and other culinary experts.
