We are on the eve of the Cricket Far North 2024/25 season.
Clubs are finalising their lists, players are dusting off their cricket gear and are set for a massive year.
Cricket Far North has a load of great players lining up across the 1st Grade this season.
From Jake Roach, arguably Far North’s best cricketer, to young Seth McGinty and Aidan Firman expected to take the competition by storm.
Below are the 13 players to watch ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Marcus Berryman – Cairns Rovers
Season 23/24 – 597 runs at 66.33. Highest Score = 95
Last years leading run scorer, already shown form in the T20 competitions so far this season including the only hundred in the Barrier Reef Big Bash. Can Berryman help the Rovers to claim that premiership title?
Andrew Phelps – Cairns Rovers
Season 23/24 – 502 runs at 45.64. Highest Score = 96
The move from Barron to Rovers came as a shock to many, but it showed no affect on Phelps as he had another dominant season with the bat. Now all he is chasing is that premiership title for the Rovers.
Seth McGinty – Cairns Rovers
Season 23/24
Batting – 384 runs at 34.91. Highest Score = 115 not out
Bowling – 12 wickets at 24.58. Best Figures = 3/26
The young all-rounder didn’t have his best year (according to him) but was thrown up the top of the order as a challenge, with another year under his belt, expect McGinty to take big strides this season.
Adam Trewin – Barron River
Season 23/24 – 362 runs at 51.71. Highest Score – 110 not out
Stepping up last season to become Barron’s skipper, Trewin took it with both hands and led from the front for what was a tough year at times in the Northern Suburbs, expect another big year for crafty batsman.
Jake Roach – Mulgrave
Season 23/24 – 137 runs at 68.5. Highest Score – 37 not out
Roach only batted on five occasions last season, dismissed twice but even though his stats do not look as big as you would expect, his talent is known well enough around the region.
Wade Matthews – Mulgrave
Season 23/24 – 19 wickets at 13.32. Best Bowling – 3/21
Mulgrave’s leading wicket taker last season, Matthews is expected to have another big season and play another integral role as his club chases their third flag in four seasons.
Brenton Edwards – Cairns Rovers
Season 23/24 – 27 wickets at 11.74. Best Bowling – 5/22
Cricket Far Norths leading wicket taker last season, was a massive reason why his side did as well as they did but fell short in the grand final, will we see another massive year from Edwards?
Justin Reid – Mulgrave
Season 23/24 – 214 runs at 42.8. Highest Score – 63 not out.
Mulgrave’s keeper had a quiet year behind the stumps but his smarts for the game were used and will continue to be this season. Expect a big year out of Reid.
Aidan Firman – Norths
Season 23/24 – 239 runs at 23.9. Highest Score – 146
Norths shining light in a tough year for the 2022/23 premiers but Firman looks to have gotten even better during the 2024 winter and is primed for a massive year.
Angus Warnock – Norths
Season 23/24 – 236 runs at 39.33. Highest Score – 114
Warnock only played a handful of games last season but was a much needed relief for a side looking to return defend their title. Looks likely to return for a big 2024/25 season to help Norths return to finals.
Thomas Boorman – Atherton
Season 23/24 – 222 runs at 22.2. Highest Score – 52
Not the best year for Boorman with the bat but he wouldn’t be too displeased by it as Atherton look to continue to threaten for a premiership title.
Brendan Falvo – Mareeba
Season 23/24 – 233 runs at 17.92. Highest Score – 56
It was always going to be a tough year for Mareeba in their first year of 1st grade but Falvo showed the competition that they are good enough to be in there and will return for season 2024/25.
Luke McAvoy – Cyclones
Season 23/24 – 257 runs at 25.7. Highest Score – 60
The Cyclones took another big step last season as the group played another year together, growing the camaraderie. With a strong pre-season under their belts, expect a big season from big boy McAvoy who looks set to lead the Cyclones up the ladder this season.
