Cairns Golf Club believe it is a feather in their cap that one of the largest clubs in Australia would poach their experienced director of golf.
FNQ local and long-time golf identity Jason Roach will next month make the move to Western Australia to take up a job with Wembley Golf Course in Perth.
Roach has been picking up awards left, right and centre over the past year and Matt Bolton, General Manager of Cairns Golf Club, says his move is a significant one for his career.
But it is also a nod to the work that the Woree-based club have been doing.
Roach is set to take on the job of operations manager at a club regarded as one of the busiest in the country.
“It is an opportunity that Jason could not refuse and I told him that he would be mad if he did not go,” Bolton said.
“It is an unbelievable opportunity for him and great for his career progression.
“Jason is moving onwards and upwards and it now shows that we are doing good things here in Cairns.”
Roach, the brother of talented local AFL ruckman and cricket all-rounder Jake, has been awarded state and Australian-wide prizes for his outstanding work within the golf industry recently.
“Jason will have more staff underneath him at the new job than I do now at the entire Cairns golf club,” Bolton said.
“While it is disappointing to lose these guys and trying to find new staff, it shows that we must be running a decent operation here.
“Jason was a member here before working here and most of the members have watched him grow up.”
Roach said after 17 years at Cairns Golf Club, it was time to move on to the next chapter.
“This opportunity is an offer I couldn’t refuse – to become part of the largest golfing facility in the Southern Hemisphere,” Roach said.
“I would like to thank everyone for the friendships made and the family you have made me feel part of.”
It is not just Roach who has progressed from the Cairns club – Anton Booy recently became the general manager of the Weipa golf club.
