It will look and feel a little different to normal, but the weekly competitions at local golf clubs will press ahead today.

After mass confusion whether golf could proceed amid coronavirus restrictions, FNQ clubs like Half Moon Bay and Gordonvale say it is almost as good as business as usual.

The Yorkeys Knob-based Half Moon Bay tee off their Saturday competition from 7am today with an 18-hole individual Stableford event.

“We are doing limited-number competitions to stick to the guidelines (and) we will change a few things,” Half Moon Bay general manager Greg Ferry said.

“We are doing everything we can to make sure everyone can get some healthy exercise, but make sure we are following the rules.

“At the moment, we do not have flag sticks in the green, we do not have bunker rakes and the ball washers are covered up, to limit people touching things.

“It is a different-looking game at the moment, but at least it is a walk, game of golf and bit of fun.”

Half Moon Bay were scheduled to run the second round of their mixed fours today, but that has been postponed.

Ferry says the club will continue to run competitions all through the week and encouraged keen golfers to ring and book beforehand to ensure there was social distancing between players.

Gordonvale Golf Club president John Hudson says his club will run normal competitions every Thursday and Saturday.

“For social players, we are open and that will be a big one for us going forward,” Hudson said. “The course is in great condition.”
