Duane Erasmus’s stunning try in Barron Trinity’s 11-point win against Brothers is just more evidence of the Machans Beach talent production line.
The young Bulls flyer showed every bit of his pace as he burned the Brethren’s left flank, beating two Brothers defenders across the stripe as he scored one of his side’s five tries.
In isolation, it’s simply a young bloke hitting the accelerator and outpacing his opposition to score a five-pointer.
But there’s more to Erasmus than his lightning speed and agility.
He is another product of the successful development system at Barron Trinity, a program years in the making which is paying big dividends for the northside club.
A-grade coach Wayne Meredith was one of a number of dedicated Bulls coaches to invest their time and patience in a young group of teenagers, showing them the ropes and teaching the Barron way as they progressed through the junior ranks.
Success followed them through the junior competitions and now Erasmus is one of several young talents Meredith has at his disposal to unleash on FNQ Rugby.
Erasmus is into his second season of A-grade rugby in the Far North, and he’s already cementing his place in Meredith’s first-choice XV.
As a winger, the speed and finishing ability certainly helps, but to Meredith his attributes extend far beyond on his quickness across the field.
“He’s a really good talker,” Meredith said. “He’s a good attacker, but he’s always willing to get involved. We ask the backs to get in and help out and he’s always happy to get in there and do his job.
“He’s a Barron boy, he played rep rugby as a junior, and was part of our under-18s team last year.
“It’s his second year of seniors and you can see that experience already.
“That’s the beauty of what we’ve been trying to do at Barron, bringing these young players through to the senior grade.”
The Bulls are fourth on the ladder, and will face third-placed Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.
