Punters could be getting wet and wild at a new waterpark at a caravan park in the Red Centre – if the plans lodged for an upgrade are approved.
The community has until November 1 to share their opinion on a proposed upgrade to Discovery Parks’ caravan park expansion in Alice Springs – set to cost an estimated $7.8 million.
Plans for a new waterpark, 14 additional cabins, parking upgrades, disability access upgrades, new landscaping, and a new shed were made public on October 18.
Central to the plan is the waterpark, which will feature a “jungle waterhouse” with a 8.6m dump bucket, according to the plans.
To make way for the waterpark, the shed will be relocated.
The 14 additional cabins for the site will be demountable, each with their own bathroom, kitchen, front deck area, and parking bays.
A new disability ramp will be built to reach the waterpark from the cabins, with all works to be undertaken within the current confines of the park.
The proposed upgrades come as the June 2024 Northern Territory government visitor data snapshot showed an 18 per cent increase in tourism for the Alice Springs MacDonnell region.
A total of 384,000 tourists visited the region, spending an average $1,655 per person and helping the region rake in $392m.
