OUTGOING Glenelg chief executive Rob Nelson believes the club is well placed financially to tackle a challenging period ahead.
Nelson left the club last month after a three-year stint, but will remain in an advisory role for the short-term. He said all SANFL clubs faced challenges going forward as traditional revenues from gaming shrunk. But he believed the Bays were one of the best placed clubs to get through the period because of their strong function and catering business, large supporter base and strong sponsorship network. "It is an extremely challenging time for the SANFL as a competition,'' Nelson said. "The environment has changed markedly over the past five or 10 years. "Clubs have traditionally relied on gaming. "We know that the industry cannot be solely relied on going forward and clubs have to develop a sustainable business model. "I think Glenelg is in a good position to do that." Nelson said he would now focus on his sports consultancy business and looked forward to having his weekends back to spend time with his family. He said he had been proud to work for the Bays, the club he supported growing up.
