Darwin police arrest alleged murderer in Malak after stabbing death of nephew

A man has been arrested in relation to the alleged stabbing death of his nephew in Malak. Latest from police.

A man has been arrested after he allegedly murdered his 37-year-old nephew.

Northern Watch Commander Sean Patterson said the victim was allegedly stabbed in his chest about 9.43pm on Monday, October 7.

Sergeant Patterson said when St John NT were called, the man was “not conscious or breathing”.

He said police attended the scene and found the man in the backyard of a Malak unit complex and performed CPR for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Sergeant Patterson said when paramedics arrived, they declared the man dead.

He said a 34-year-old man, reported to be the victims uncle, was arrested in relation to the alleged offence during the resuscitation attempts.

Sergeant Patterson said he expected the man – who remained in custody – would be charged on Tuesday.

He said the Major Crime Unit was investigating at the scene.

A neighbour told this masthead she had heard a lot of noise coming “from that area” over the past three days.

The woman said she had heard a man screaming in the vicinity some nights before.

She said she had been asleep at the time of the incident but woke at about 1am.

Looking outside her window, she had seen a paddy wagon and flashing lights but nothing more.

NT Police in a statement on Tuesday morning urged those with information who had not yet spoken to police to contact 131 444 or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
