A young Gold Coast nightclub employee who trafficked meth via a social media chat group entitled Infamous, which was infiltrated by undercover police, has been jailed after pleading guilty to 10 serious drug charges.
Labrador woman Dakota Lauren Christie, 23, appeared in Brisbane Supreme Court on March 3, having previously pleaded guilty to a 10-count indictment, according to a recently published judgment of Justice Michael Copley KC.
Christie admitted to trafficking in methamphetamine, seven counts of supplying methamphetamine, possessing methamphetamine in excess of 2g, and possessing cash that was the proceeds of drug trafficking.
The offending occurred between February 24, 2023 and December 7, 2023 when she was arrested after undercover police operatives arranged to buy meth from her.
The trafficking occurred for about a fortnight, between November 23, 2023 and her arrest.
The court heard Christie was detected after police started an operation in November 2023 targeting trafficking via social media applications such as Facebook.
Officers accessed Facebook group chat Infamous and identified Christie, who was advertising meth for sale in quantities from 0.01g (a ‘point’) up to an ounce, as one of the participants.
The Infamous chat linked through to a group, Gold Coast Gear, on encrypted messaging application Telegram, and it was further identified Christie was the administrator of that group.
An undercover officer arranged to purchase 3.5g of meth – with a purity of about 75 per cent – for $750, and the transaction took place at a unit complex at Pomona Tce, Labrador on December 5, 2023, the court heard.
A further sale, $2400 for half an ounce of meth – again with a purity of about 75 per cent – was arranged at a park in Labrador for two days later.
After the undercover officer identified himself, Christie attempted to flee but she was apprehended a short distance away, where she was found in possession of 13.9g of the addictive substance.
Analysis of her mobile phone uncovered evidence of the seven separate supplies of meth, and a subsequent search of her residence found an additional 9.9g of meth (77 per cent purity), $2890 cash, and a variety of smoking devices.
The court heard Christie’s trafficking operation started less than a fortnight after she was released from custody after serving a sentence from July 13 to November 16, 2023 for offences including dangerous operation of a vehicle, as well as a suite of drug and property offending for which probation was also imposed.
The trafficking was in breach of that order, the court heard.
In November 2022, Christie pleaded guilty to driving with methamphetamine and ketamine in her system when she collided with a tree, a collision that almost killed her and left her wheelchair-bound for many months.
The court was told Christie, who worked at a Surfers Paradise nightclub, had a prejudicial upbringing, being one of several children to parents who were heroin addicts, and she only completed school to year 9.
Latterly, she had been involved in a series of domestically violent relationships.
Justice Copley sentenced Christie to three years’ imprisonment with court-ordered parole release on November 29 this year, the point at which she would have served nine months.
