The fate of the Far North’s biggest junior rugby league competition will not be known until Thursday after what could be a historic meeting was postponed.
RESCUE PACKAGE FOR JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE CLUBS
Presidents from the Cairns District Junior Rugby League clubs were set to meet Monday night to determine if they would go ahead with a season this year.
The delay is to allow for the Queensland Government’s end of month review and any changes to restrictions, and for another update from the Queensland Rugby League.
CDJRL bosses have already indicated the venue limit of 100 people at sporting grounds is simply not enough to make running a season sustainable.
President Jodi Stevens said an increase to 500 people would allow for canteens to operate, would lessen the drastic ask of volunteers, and allow the league to generate an income to cover costs.
One club president told the Cairns Post last week their club would likely not participate in a condensed 2020 season due to the ask on volunteers and costs to run teams.
Another club president said their volunteers would pull out all of the stops to ensure their children could play rugby league this year.
It comes as the Cairns Post revealed the QRL was in talks with local high schools about running under-15 and under-18 games.
In Cairns, the U18s fall under the banner of the CDRL, though that competition was cancelled at the start of June.
The school set-up would allow for those players in critical age groups, many of whom are in Year 12, to get some time playing rugby league.
Eacham Junior Rugby League has declared they will return to training at the first possible opportunity, with games from July 25.
