Cricket Far North boss reveals his future in the role

A Far North sporting administrator has revealed their future, and how the coronavirus pandemic might have forced a change of fortune.

Cricket Far North president Peter Huey will consider staying on for another season, despite initial plans to stand down from the role at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

Huey had planned to call stumps on his time as president when the season wrapped up last month – a decision that many of the Far North cricketing fraternity knew about – but was now hesitant to stand down from the role as the region’s sporting community comes to grips with the impact of the coronavirus.

“I’m still hanging around for now but the idea was for me not to be there next season,” he said.

“I’m just a bit apprehensive about whether I will or won’t at the moment, only because of what happened towards the end of the season with the coronavirus.”

Cricket Far North ended its 2019/20 season early last month, after following Cricket Australia’s recommendations, backed by Queensland Cricket, to cancel all organised cricket in the community for the remainder of the season.

“I just think it would be good to get some things in place for next season,” Huey said.

“There is going to be some communication and some stuff we need to work out with the winter codes and I don’t think that it would be good for a new president to be thrown into that role.

“With the knowledge I’ve attained over the last couple of years, I might just be able to make that work a little bit easier for them, rather than them having to deal with it in their first year.”

Cricket Far North will be part of a working group of the Far North’s top sporting codes planning to come together to not only help their code survive, but the competition down the road as well.

“AFL’s going to be the biggest one for cricket (to work with),” Huey said.

“I believe they’ve got enough ovals, it will just possibly be Saints AFL club that will be affected the most as they might lose some home games if we start our season on time.

“When they’re ready to speak to us and let us know, we’ll openly have a conversation about it.”

Huey said he had already been contacted by FNQ Football about the use of Endeavour Park later in the year, with a potential crossover between their respective seasons.
