The cricket season came to an early end last month but one Far North club is padding up for a more important innings.
Rovers Cricket Club have partnered with Spicy Bite Indian Restaurant to help international students in Cairns.
Many international students have played for the club over the years, but with the coronavirus pandemic forcing a seismic shift in the business and financial landscape, there have been concerns some may be without help.
That’s where Rovers will step in.
The brainchild of “players who wished to remain anonymous”, Rovers president Mark Malone said the club had so far raised more than $2000 to provide international students with free meals, as well as support the restaurant’s employees.
“A couple of our players used to be international students and they know how hard it is to live so far from home and without that support,” Malone said.
“They put their heads together to come up with this plan. Our club has been very well supported by the Cairns community for 125 years and now it’s our turn to step up and give back.
“On the other side of this pandemic we will need the education sector in our city to be able to get back up and running to drive our economy.
“This is our way of doing our bit to support those who are impacted and support our city over the long term.”
