Construction has kicked off on the $99.8 million Bowen Road Bridge duplication project across Idalia and Rosslea

The cranes are up and work is underway on a $99.8m duplication of the Bowen Road Bridge, which will allow for greater access between Rosslea and Idalia. Here’s the latest.

The cranes are up and work is underway as on a $99.8 million duplication of the Bowen Road Bridge, which will allow for greater access between Rosslea and Idalia.

The second bridge will sit beside the existing bridge, converting the crossing from two to four lanes.

With more than 24,000 people driving across the bridge each day Member for Mundingburra Les Walker said it was an important milestone for the Townsville community.

The first stages of construction will see the building of a bund wall in the river to allow for piling works on the bridge to commence.

The project, with the tender awarded to Albem Operations Pty Ltd and SGQ Pty Ltd Joint Venture in June this year, is expected to be completed weather and scheduling permitted by the middle of 2026.

“Construction of a new bridge and the transformation of the route from two to four lanes is vital for a region that is still growing, reducing congestion and enhancing safety for all road users,” he said.

“I am proud to be part of this government that is delivering this crucial work for Townsville and I look forward to seeing it completed and traffic moving smoothly through this area in the future.”

The project will also deliver a 3m wide walkway and bike lane to the side as well as upgraded lighting and CCTV and 150 trees added into the surrounding environment.
