Getting the four points is always the objective, but City Lions’ women’s team feel they are developing for the future while doing it.
The Holloways Beach girls scored a comfortable first-up AFL Cairns victory on Saturday afternoon against their northern beaches rivals.
While playing-coach Luana Healey was pleased to see her team perform, it was a few “newbies” who impressed most.
New faces such as Grace Johnson in the middle of the ground and Mya Cozzuol, while Cassandra Blackeby hit the scoreboard in her first outing and was named in the best players.
“We had seven girls debut on Saturday, two of which came from our youth girls side, which is another part of our roles as coaches is to give people that chance to step up and develop,” Healey said.

“We have had a few ladies come across because they are just friends of players and never played the sport before.
“They worked hard to get there over the pre-season and the coronavirus shutdown – everyone came back fitter.

“That helped us get over the line, the fitness to play four quarters of football.”
In an uncompetitive opening round of fixtures, Cairns Saints and Manunda also started their revised 2020 seasons on a positive note.
