Kiwi pop-sensation Lorde sparked chaos in New York City when a surprise fan event prompted police to step in.
The 28-year-old messaged fans on Tuesday to meet her in a park and many quickly figured out the location was Manhattan’s iconic Washington Square Park.
The park was overflowing with fans by 7pm, all hoping to catch a glimpse of Lorde, but the event was abruptly shut down by police and park rangers moments before it began.
According to the NYPD, Lorde’s team did not have the required permits to host a performance and fans were told to leave.
The singer later apologised on Instagram, asking everyone to “disperse.”
Yet the evening took another turn when, two hours later, Lorde came back for an unexpected encore with a more intimate audience.
Dressed casually in baggy jeans and a white shirt, she stood on a table and danced to her new song What Was That instead of singing live.
“You guys are so amazing. I love you so much,” she told the remaining crowd.
Though the night didn’t go as planned, the spontaneous appearance delighted fans and sparked a buzz online.
One fan posted on X, “Life isn’t real. I saw Lorde perform in Washington Square Park and randomly met Blood Orange.”
It comes on the heels of Lorde teasing her new album in her TikTok debut, with the release date set for April 25.
