A NSW-based A-League soccer player has been charged by police with the sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman.

NSW Police arrested Central Coast Mariners’ striker Angel Torres, 24, at a Terrigal home on Monday.

The Colombian national was then charged with multiple offences, including aggravated sexual assault without consent, over the alleged incident on Sunday.

Torres, who is on bail, is listed to appear at Gosford Local Court on May 6.

In a statement, a NSW Police spokesman said on Tuesday the alleged victim was a 21-year-old woman.

“Following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault against a 21-year-old woman on Sunday, a 24-year-old man was arrested at a Terrigal property (on Monday),” he said.

“He was taken to Gosford Police Station where he was charged with two counts of common assault, intimidation and aggravated sexual intercourse without consent.”

The Mariners said in a statement that Torres had been suspended.

“Given the alleged serious criminal offences with which Torres has been charged, Football Australia immediately imposed a no-fault suspension,” the spokesman said.

“The suspension is a precautionary measure that suspends the player from participating in football and club related activities.

“It is important to note that Football Australia in imposing this interim suspension is making no finding of guilt or fault in respect of the offences with which Torres has been charged.

“Such charges remain matters to be determined by the courts”.

Torres, who has scored 13 goals in 23 matches, is one of the Mariners’ best players.

He recently was playing in Portugal and Malta before signing with the NSW team, which is second on the A-League ladder and last year’s grand final winners.

Torres said on Tuesday in a now deleted Instagram post: “No one can go against God … stronger than ever”.

The Mariners had just played an AFC Cup game against a local team in Kyrgyzstan last week.
