Connecting the community, keeping healthy and enjoying nature were the key takeaways for more than 30 men and women who participated in this year’s Queensland Walks Month launch on the Cairns Esplanade.
Queensland Walks Month and Your Tribe Australia officially started the Queensland Walks launch on Friday afternoon with a walk along the Esplanade followed by a sausage sizzle.
Your Tribe Australia Founder and 2023 Cairns Woman of the Year Jo Piggott said Friday’s walk was a chance for the community to come together to socialise and raise funds for charity.
“We wanted to show that anyone and everyone can go for a walk, run, stroll or roll in the community,” Ms Piggott said.
“The aim is to encourage more people to get together and be active, healthy and socially connected. We had a sausage sizzle afterwards as one of our members is raising funds for the Hospital Foundation so we wanted to help with that.”
While most Your Tribe walk events were not affiliated with charity groups, Ms Piggott said members often had the opportunity to raise funds for organisations close to their hearts.
“We’ve got three groups participating the CQSuper cardiac challenge and a few people doing CQUniversity’s 10,000 steps challenge so there’s a bit of competition going on,” she said.
Queensland Walks Month CEO Anna Campbell said the launch was a great way to connect communities, celebrate walking and share local places where people enjoyed walking.
“We’re excited to come up to Cairns and work with Jo from Your Tribe who put a fabulous group together for an accessible walk along the Esplanade. It’s a really great way of highlighting accessible, inclusive and healthy spaces,” Ms Campbell said.
