A water police crew on patrol have shared heartwarming vision of a baby kangaroo being plucked from floodwaters in Burketown.
On Monday, Queensland Police Service released video of deployed Townsville Water Police rescuing baby ‘Lucky’ in the Gulf of Carpentaria town, which has been inundated for several days.
The baby kangaroo can be see almost submerged in the vision.
It is not known how old Lucky’s is, or if its mother survived the floodwaters.
An officer reached down and pulled the tired animal from the waters, before comforting it.
When released, Lucky bounded happily onto dry land.
Earlier, police were responding to the severe weather event affecting the Nicholson Gregory Catchment area, with major flooding still occurring in Burketown and the Gregory River.
Due to the current conditions, it is unsafe for displaced people to return to their homes and police urged residents to limit movement in the flood water due to unseen hazards and recent crocodile sightings.
Burketown sewage and water treatment plants in Burketown are now offline, with residents instructed to conserve water usage and continue to monitor advice from Burketown Shire Council.
