Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen or have footage of a blue Holden station wagon in the hours or minutes before it crashed on the Mulligan Hwy on Wednesday, killing two people and critically injuring a third.

Two people have been killed following a horror crash south west of Cooktown.

Police said at about at 3.45pm on Wednesday, a blue 2004 Holden Commodore station wagon was headed west on the Mulligan Highway at Lakeland near the Boggy Creek Bridge, when it left the roadway and rolled several times.

Inspector Rob Campbell said investigations indicated the station wagon was travelling west from Lakeland to Cooktown and encountered a sweeping bend.
“For an unknown reason, the vehicle has left the roadway, hit a tree and rolled,” Insp Campbell said.

He said the section of the road was dry at the time of the incident and the weather was fine and clear.

The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old woman, and one passenger, a 25-year-old man, died at the scene.

A 48-year-old man was flown to Cairns in a critical condition and has since stabilised.

Three other passengers - a 28-year-old man, 21-year-old woman, and 19-year-old woman - were transported to the Cooktown Hospital with minor injuries.

Insp Campbell said the investigation into the crash would examine the fatal five contributors to crashes; speed, inattention/distraction, tiredness, seatbelts, and drug/drink driving.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner into the cause of the crash and resulting deaths.

Police are appealing for witnesses, dashcam or CCTV footage that road users or businesses may have had of a blue 2004 Holden Commodore Station Wagon in the Mulligan Highway, Lakeland, Palmer River, Mt Carbine area on the afternoon of November 1.

Meanwhile, a man has died while another is in hospital following a horrific highway rollover on the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Sarina on Wednesday afternoon.

A Queensland Police Service statement said initial investigations indicate the 4WD ute was headed south when it “left the road and rolled several times” just past Sarina Homebush Rd at 3.25pm.
