Three injured in Trinity Inlet jet boat collision with tinnie

The driver at the helm of the Bad Fishy jet boat has tested positive to an initial drug test and been charged with dangerous operation of a vessel after crashing into a fishing boat.

The driver at the helm of the Bad Fishy jet boat has tested positive to an initial drug test and been charged with dangerous operation of a vessel after crashing into a fishing boat.

On Thursday Water Police charged a 50-year-old man Trinity Beach man in relation to an incident on Sunday, September 1.

The incident took place on the southeastern side of Admiralty Island opposite the entrance of Redbank Creek.

Initial police investigations indicate a commercial jet boat and a 4.6m aluminium boat crashed at 11am.

The three people on the aluminium boat sustained minor injuries.

Following police investigations and a public appeal for information on Wednesday the

50-year-old man has now been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vessel.

He was issued a notice to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on October 21.

Police also allege the man tested positive to an initial drug test, however this result is subject to further testing.

Parent company of Bad Fishy Jet Boat, Cairns Adventure Group provided a statement after being contacted by the Cairns Post.

Cairns Adventure Group general manager Fiona John confirmed an incident took place involving a Bad Fishy jet boat and a private fishing vessel.

“We are cooperating fully with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the Cairns Water Police as they conduct their investigation,” she said.

“We are grateful that there were no major injuries reported.

“The safety and wellbeing of our passengers, crew, and the wider community are our top priorities.

“We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and will continue to work closely with the authorities to ensure a thorough review of the incident.”

Earlier, police had appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, including a vessel that was anchored nearby or anyone who may have relevant information or CCTV/dashcam footage to come forward.
