A new sports bar has moved into the old Outback Jacks premises to bring an immersive sports-watching setup and Aussie food flavours to the heart of the CBD.
Founded by three Cairns locals with a shared passion for investing in their city, The Brass Bookie has begun trading to bring new life to a landmark corner tenancy where Abbott and Aplin streets meet.
Locally sourced beers, a menu curated for Australian palates and 17 screens through the venue bring an elevated presence to the Cairns hospitality sector while creating 20 new jobs.
The tenancy until this week has been vacant since early 2022.
After Outback Jacks closed in 2018 new franchise holder Maa Foods rebranded and reopened a year later in an ill-timed move months before Covid lockdowns impacted Cairns.
A South Australian couple announced the opening of steak and schnitzel joint Da Schnit’z in December 2022 however the restaurant never opened.
Owners of Hello Harry which opened on the Esplanade in 2021, Matt Allen, Steve Cluney, and Justin Betts have now added their own touch and given The Brass Bookie venue a fresh new look.
“The Brass Bookie is more than just a sports bar, it’s a commitment to the Cairns community and the local economy,” director Matt Allen said.
“As Cairns locals ourselves, we wanted to create a space that would bring people together and offer a comfortable, casual location that showcases major sporting events.
“We’re thrilled to open in this prime location and bring life back to this iconic spot in the CBD.”
To celebrate the opening The Brass Bookie has partnered with homegrown NRL star James “Chicko” Segeyaro who will create food-based content inspired by the venue’s signature dishes to be shared via the Help Yah Self Instagram feed.
The menu features authentic Australian flavours, prioritising shared plates and local ingredients.
While the drinks range will include a curated selection of beers from Cairns’ own
Macalister Brewing Company.
On Saturday November 9 The Brass Bookie will officially celebrate it’s
grand opening with a variety of food specials including $10 pizzas, $15 Moreton Bay
Bug Rolls and a variety of drink discounts available from 5pm.
