Where Australia's super-rich splash their cash

A BULLETPROOF glass window touted as the biggest window in the southern hemisphere, a concert-quality acoustic sound system, saltwater aquarium and classic car showroom are features of a spectacular northern beaches home that has hit the market for $6.8m.

The five bedroom property at 50 Kewarra Street, Kewarra Beach is known locally as the glass house and has been an exclusive holiday rental as well as a beachfront getaway for its owners, former M1NT Global Holding boss Alistair Paton and his wife Theresa, who are moving to Switzerland.

M1NT was famous for its extravagant nightclub parties in London and Shanghai, which attracted the likes of David and Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton, John Legend, Adele and Usher.

Sotheby’s Queensland agent Barbara Wolveridge revealed two sets of A-list celebrities floating around the Far North at present tried to book the home but were turned down because prospective buyers were flying to inspect the property on a 1,652sq m block.

Mr Paton revealed Ferrari race car driver Spaniard Fernando Alonso, members of the extended British Royal family, and motivational speaker Tony Robbins had stayed.

Mr Robbins landed a helicopter on the beach.

“Displaying my favourite classic cars inside the lobby of the house is a pretty cool trick and taking on the behaviour of a venomous lionfish which swims in the saltwater aquarium while on Zoom does occasionally make one feel like a James Bond villain,” Mr Paton said.

He said his favourite elements included the foyer, a soundproof office, huge pool and saltwater aquarium.

“You can drive a car through the double-door entry through the foyer into the gallery,” Mr Paton said.

“In the aquarium we have Lionfish, an Epaulet Shark, Stone Fish, a Picasso Tigger and a Dog Face Puffer – I wanted a tank with a Blue Ring Octopus and Leopard Sharks, but that was sensibly tempered given our young children enjoying feeding the fish.

“People instantly wow when they walk through the front door and see the massive steel and glass curtain wall – everyone wonders how it was built, how long it took, and how we got the materials to the building site,” he said.

“They also love the Ducati inside, the extensive art gallery walls and the vintage Alfa Romeo that we used to have parked inside.”

Theresa Paton said the solar panels were a key feature.

“Installing the solar panels has resulted in reducing the town’s electricity consumption by 85 per cent,” she said with a laugh.

“With three children including a three-month-old baby, our household has its share of running the washing machine, clothes dryer, and other electrical appliances.”

She said she loved the two master bedrooms.

“They’re huge, they’ve got baths, ensuites and coffee machines – they are like little houses in themselves,” Mrs Paton said.

“I love the oversized balconies.”
