PADDLERS, cyclists and runners will zoom about Mission Beach this Sunday, competing to stand atop the podium of one of the Far North’s most authentic and backyard-style adventure races: Ona Mission Multisport Adventure.

The Mission Beach event, hosted by the Cassowary Coast Multisport Club, is a rewarding tangle of arduous adventure activities in a picturesque environment.

Participants – who can elect to do short, 42km, or long, 63km, versions of the race – will paddle out to Dunk Island, run a good chunk of it, paddle back to South Mission Beach, cycle through rainforest and then return for the final dash out to Morgans Lookout and back.

Event organiser Richard Blanchette said this weekend will be a special iteration.

“We’re celebrating our 15th year,” he said.

“The weather is looking good. We’re expecting about 100 participants.”

Mr Blanchette said it’s an awesome spectator event but warns that onlookers will feel serious temptation to enter next year.

“It’s infectious, a nice Mission Beach vibe,” he said.

“It’s a very popular first-time adventure race and there are some inspiring performances every year.”

A $3000 dual-suspension mountain bike is up for grabs as a random draw prize, along with cash prizes for winners.

Registrations are open until 11.30am Friday, September 16.

Kayaking, running and mountain biking gear is essential but Mr Blanchette said keen entrants who find themselves bereft of equipment can find hire options in the town or by asking around on social media.
