The family of a woman who police allege a Manunda man threatened with two samurai swords has told the man they will “find him and will stab him to death” a Cairns court has heard.

Bobby Bara, 22, applied for bail in Cairns Magistrate court on October 6 after being charged with one count of going armed as to cause fear.

Police allege that Mr Bara followed a woman to her Mooroobool home around 1am on Friday morning as she tried to get away from him and she locked the door behind her.

The court heard he then popped the lock.

Police Prosecutor April Boyce told the court the complainant told the man to leave and he did so.

But then he allegedly returned brandishing two samurai swords; he is alleged to have hit the screen doors with the swords and threatened to stab and kill all the people inside the residence before one disarmed him, Ms Boyce told the court.

MR Bara’s lawyer, Carol Longhurst, told the court the man was drunk, had no memory of the event, and wanted to attend a sorry business for the recent untimely death of his sister.

The prosecutor told the court Mr Bara’s bail should be refused not only because “there was a risk he may offend” – but for his own safety.

“The complainant’s family have told him they would find him and kill him,” she said.

Magistrate Michael Dalton said he had read the Crown’s written affidavit opposing bail and that it said Mr Bara be “remanded for his own protection because the family of whom he threatened have indicated to police that they would seek to inflict retaliatory violence upon him, that they know where he lives and said they would stab him to death”.

But in considering the bail application, Mr Dalton asked, “Is Lotus Glen going to be any safer? Especially when you consider family relationships?”

He said putting the 22-year-old in protective custody would make “his time more onerous”.

Mr Dalton said he believed the alleged incident resulted from “alcohol-fuelled violence”

He granted bail on the condition the man stop drinking alcohol and submit to regular breath tests.

“You’re on dry bail,” he told the man who appeared via video link from custody.

“Because it’s the alcohol that is causing you problems.”

The matter will return to court on November 23.
