A 14-year-old boy has saved a young girl from drowning in a swollen creek in Cairns.
A softly-spoken Michael Misi rescued the young girl late on Friday, after heavy rains flooded stormawater drain and creeks including at Gordon Creek.
Michael said he was walking home from school when he heard a group of kids yelling for help on the Windarra St bridge.
When he got there he could see a young girl was stuck under the bridge and was close to slipping under water so he jumped in to rescue her.
His mother Ellen said his quick-thinking might have saved the young girl.
“He went to check on them and said he didn't even think about it. He just jumped in because he could see that the water level was up to the young girl’s face,” Ms Misi said.
“He said he was able to get a grip on the girl and dug his feet into the rocks to hold them against the rushing water so the current wouldn’t take them.”
Ms Misi said her son had hurt his ankle as a result.
“He had to really dig his feet into the shore and he injured his ankle a little bit as he pulled her out of the water to safety,” she said.
Michael and the young girl were assessed at the scene.
She said she and Michael’s brothers were all very proud of him.
“I was shocked when I heard about it,” she said.
“He is more of the quiet one compared to his brothers and they know how fast the water moves through there so they are very impressed and proud.”
Michael is in Year 10 at Woree State High School and plays rugby at Kangaroos Junior Rugby League Club.
He has also been selected for the Broncos Academy.
“He’s very excited about seeing where he can go with his footy,” Ms Misi said.
