Condition of patients, injured in firey head-on crash, updated

Cairns Hospital has provided an update on three patients requiring medical attention after two cars collided on the Kennedy Highway on Saturday.

Cairns Hospital has provided an update on three patients requiring medical attention after two cars collided on the Kennedy Highway on Saturday.

Queensland Ambulance Service reported Seven patients had been assessed at the scene of the head-on crash, three of which were taken to Cairns Hospital for further treatment.

On Sunday morning an 86-year-old man, a 68-year-old woman and a 62-year-old woman were recovering in a stable condition.

The Kennedy Highway at Walkamin reopened to traffic in both directions at 7.50pm after being closed for more than five hours.

Earlier a man who was trapped in a vehicle following a head-on crash 10km south of Mareeba, was extracted from the vehicle.

Two patients involved in the crash were confirmed to be in critical condition.

At about 5pm on Saturday an ambulance spokeswoman confirmed one man had been removed from the car and was awaiting transportation to hospital via helicopter.

“There are two patients in critical condition and will be flown out by helicopter,” the spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said two other patients had been transported to Mareeba hospital via road in a stable condition.

Earlier it was reported emergency services were at the scene of a head-on crash on the Atherton Tablelands involving a vehicle fire and a patient had trapped in wreckage.

At 3.15pm paramedics received a triple-0 call following a two car crash on the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Atherton at the corner of Channel Road East.

One vehicle is at the scene and three more have been assigned to the job.

It’s understood one vehicle burst into flames on impact but the fire has since been extinguished.

The driver of one car, aged in his 30s, is understood to be trapped while two others sustained minor injuries.

A police spokeswoman said traffic controls were in place.

“They are doing traffic control,” she said.

Queensland Ambulance Service reported seven patients are being assessed and one patient is trapped.

At 3.37pm the Rescue 510 helicopter departed Cairns for the crash site, about 10km south of Mareeba.

The highway is understood to be blocked between the Channel Rd intersection and Rocky Creek.

Traffic is banked up at the scene and delays are expected.
