Man charged with brandishing knife at police in Cairns CBD

A teenager has been charged with vandalising a police car before a man allegedly brandishing a weapon at police in the Cairns CBD.

Police allege a 15-year-old boy graffitied the side of a police car parked on the Cairns Esplanade just before 6pm on Thursday.

While officers spoke with the boy near a Lake Street bus stop around 7.30pm, an 18-year-old man allegedly approached them holding a knife in his hand.

It is understood police unholstered a taser, but did not deploy it.

The man dropped the knife before becoming involved in a scuffle with the officers.

It is further alleged the man had graffitied and damaged other property around the city before and after this incident.

The boy has been charged with one count of wilful damage of police property and is due to appear before the Cairns Children’s Court on June 18.

The man has been charged with two counts of wilful damage, and one count each of going armed so as to cause fear, obstruct police, and contravene police direction.

He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on June 27.

It comes after a week-long crime crackdown across the Far North which led to 74 adults and 72 youths charged with hundreds of offences, as one person of interest is allegedly on the run.
