‘Links us together’: Inaugural Heritage Expo to showcase region’s history

From guided tours to antique appraisals, historical societies around the region will share a glimpse of life 100 years ago at the inaugural Far North Heritage Expo this weekend.

From guided tours to tin panning and antique appraisals, museums and historical societies around the region will share a glimpse of life 100 years ago at the inaugural Far North Heritage Expo on September 7.

The free, family friendly event will take place in Herberton and includes a packed program of museum tours, food stalls, kids’ crafts, guest speakers and more.

Tablelands councillor Annette Haydon said it was important for local knowledge and history to be retained and celebrated.

“Our North Queensland heritage defines who we are as Tablelanders and our shared ties and histories link us together through the generations,” Cr Haydon said.

Attendees were encouraged to bring antiques which will be appraised by ABC Far North’s Nick Watling, or learn to research family history with the Cairns Museum.

“You won’t need to be a heritage buff to enjoy this free expo as there’s so much to see and do,” she said.

“There’s a great line-up of activities, tours and speakers, and plenty of food on sale. You can try your hand at tin panning and record your oral history.”

The Far North Heritage Expo will take place from 9am to 3pm on Saturday, September 7 at the Herberton Mining Centre.
