Radio presenter and Indigenous influencer Trevor Tim has joined Team Eden and will contest Division 4 at the March 2023 Cairns Regional Council elections.
Division 4 includes Earlville, Kanimbla, and Mooroobool as well as parts of Manoora and Manunda.
Mayoral candidate Amy Eden said Mr Tim, a host on National Indigenous Radio Service’s National Talkback show, had been a Cairns resident for 45 years and would focus on developing solutions for the diverse needs of the Division 4 community.
“Trevor’s commitment to the community has been extraordinary. He has worked for 30 years in the tourism industry … and has been delivering his ‘Success with Attitude’ motivational speaker business to youth across the country,” Ms Eden said.
“I have worked closely with Trevor over many years and his ethics, actions and commitment to the community are a wonderful fit for Team Eden.”
Mr Tim said he was eager to advocate for the community’s needs.
“Division 4 is a wonderful part of the Cairns community and is faced with many challenges that I am committed to work through in partnership with the community,” he said.
“I’m very passionate about inspiring people to be the best they can be. I’m also very concerned about youth crime, keeping people safe but also helping troubled youth to seek a great vision for their lives.”
Mr Tim is the second addition to Team Eden after Kesa Strieby confirmed she would contest Division 2 with Ms Eden’s Team.
Restaurateur Sam Byrd was the Division 7 candidate for Team Eden but he dropped out of the race in August.
Paramedic and Earlville resident Jeremy Neal will also contest Division 4 as part of Cairns Unity Team, led by mayoral candidate and deputy mayor Terry James.
Mr Neal was previously involved with the federal LNP but said his focus now was very much on the local community.
“I left the Liberal Party some years ago now. I enjoyed that but there are some differences of opinion and I’m happy to work with small town, local politics rather than big, overarching politics, fighting with Canberra and Brisbane,” he said.
“I’ve been working 10 years as a paramedic now. I’ve been going to community members in their times of need over all those years.
“I’ve seen what people need and what they want. I’ve seen the good work council has been doing and where else we also need to pick up in the suburbs.”
Mr Neal said his focus would be on the completion of local projects, sensible infill development policies and curtailing of youth crime if he was elected.
“I want to continue on with the amalgamation of the Woree and Earlville tennis clubs, there’s a new clubhouse on the cards for those guys,” he said.
“We also want to push CCTV out to the suburbs, just to the hotspots.”
Youth justice advocate and law student Shane Cuthbert will also contest Division 4.
