A Gold Coast lighting technician has lodged a $700,000 personal injury claim against the owners of a Cairns nightclub and a local security firm, alleging he was kicked in the knee as he was removed from the venue.

According to documents filed in the Cairns civil courts, self-employed Gold Coast film worker Beau Koorockin, 30, was in Cairns in August 2022 when he was refused entry to The Attic, connected to Gilligan’s Resort and Bar, in the early morning of August 13, 2022.

His ID was confiscated by security officers, according to the claim.

Gold Coast lighting technician Beau Koorockin, whose IMBD profile includes the films Ticket to Paradise and Elvis, is suing a Cairns nightspot and security firm, claiming more than $700,000 in personal injury compensation and damages, over his removal from The Attic in August 2022.

Mr Koorockin’s IMDb profile includes the George Clooney and Julia Roberts film, Ticket to Paradise, and Elvis, listing his roles as “grip assistant”, “additional grip” and “working in the camera and electrical department”.

Images on his Instagram account show him on set in the Far North around the time he alleges he was injured.

In Mr Koorockin’s claim, he said security guards used “excessive force” removing him from the club, alleging he was kicked in the knee, threatened and “physically assaulted” after he reached to get his ID back.

He says a security guard threatened to break his arm and that he suffered bruising, cuts and a “moderate” knee and psychological injury.

Mr Koorockin is seeking compensation and damages of $702,014, including $350,000 for future lost earnings, more than $64,000 for medical and specialist expenses, $3000 for a knee brace, and $79,440 for two hours of assistance a week for grocery shopping, laundry and “more complex” household activities.

Heightened Security and Cairns Bed and Bar, trading as Gilligan’s, have each filed documents in the Cairns Civil Courts indicating they intend to defend and dispute the claim, describing the claims as “embarrassing”, and saying the amount sought was “inconsistent with medical evidence”.

Lawyers for Gilligan’s, in documents filed with the civil court, noted there was “an altercation” between security guards and Mr Koorockin outside the Attic, but said he “did not enter the hotel”, was not a patron, and they were not liable for any alleged injuries.

They questioned the nature of Mr Koorockin’s injury and his employment claims, and his level of intoxication at the time, which was echoed in legal documents from Heightened Security.

Lawyers for Heightened Security, in their claim, deny Mr Koorockin was physically assaulted, kicked, punched or threatened, and said he was taken away in a police wagon after he was restrained and removed from Gilligan’s.

They said Mr Koorockin made a complaint to police about the security guards, which was investigated, security footage reviewed, and no action taken by the police against the security guards.

He was intoxicated, acting aggressively and instigated an altercation, according to their filed documents.

“Neither (Heightened Security), nor the security staff owed (Mr Koorockin) a duty of care to protect him from the consequences of his actions,” the document states.

“The allegations are vague and unparticularised.”

The matter is before the civil courts and no hearing date has been set.
