Police have swarmed a well-known Cairns brewery after a teenage girl climbed into the roof and began throwing projectiles at officers attempting to get her down.
Two Queensland Fire Service trucks and up to five police vehicles were sent to Hemingway’s Brewery on Wharf St about 11am on Friday after a 16-year-old girl climbed onto huge beer brewing tanks and refused to come down.
A tradesman, who asked to remain anonymous, was asked to vacate the building while fire crews and police officers tried to convince the girl to come down.
“She’s 5m off the ground,” he said.
“I heard one of the officers asking her what kind of ice cream she liked.”
The girl was understood to be walking along airconditioning ducts high in the roof of the industrial style shed.
The tradie said the girl’s carer was watching the rescue efforts from a side door of the large dockside shed.
It’s understood the girl is in the care of Child Safety Queensland.
A Queensland Fire Service officer said crews had entered the building with a ladder to try and get the girl down.
“We are trying to work out if they are injured or what type of situation they are in,” he said.
“Obviously it’s a little bit sensitive with all the police and they have closed the door.”
Hemingway’s Brewery staff closed the sliding door to a loading dock fronting the car park of the venue in response to a Cairns Post photographer taking pictures of the unfolding incident.
A police spokeswoman reported the incident had been resolved by 1.20pm.
