A REFERENDUM on an Indigenous Voice to parliament is on the horizon, and one Far North Indigenous organisation is preparing advocates in an epic way.

Deadly Inspiring Youth Doing Good (DIYDG) staff said that passionate young people from all walks of life were key to referendum success.

The Manunda-based organisation was calling for young people to join them on a ten-day return convoy from Cairns to the Gurindji Freedom Festival in the Northern Territory, a trek that will equip and inspire youth to find the true strength of their advocacy.

“The only criteria is that you’re between 18 and 30 and you’re a supporter of the Uluru Statement,” said chairperson Samara Jose.

“The goal is that this trip will come at no cost to those participating.

“We are doing this to provide support to passionate advocates whose voices have previously not been heard.”

The convoy, inspired by Charlie Perkins’ 1965 Freedom Ride, departs on August 22. Participants will receive advocacy training and can expect to do some local advocacy work along the way in Mount Isa and Katherine.

Manny Williams, a 24 year-old Indigenous man and youth support worker from Mooroobool, has already signed up and said this is a great opportunity.

“Supporting youth is where my passion is,” he said.

“This is a chance for me to make a positive change for the people I work with.

“Our ancestors’ strength and passion burns within us. Now that we’re here, we have to pave the way for future generations.

“Don’t be afraid to advocate for things you’re passionate about. I encourage all young people to jump on this opportunity.”
