Your weekly round-up of all eight grades of Cricket Far North’s senior competitions.

WEEK 10

Second grade (Round 9)

A duck frenzy went down at Loder Park as United were dismissed for just 38 runs by Atherton.

Five United batsmen were sent packing without any runs, with Atherton bowlers Shane Legge (3-0 in five overs) and Dylan Pettingill (3-8 in five overs) leading the steamrolling.

Atherton were able to cruise past United’s total to win by eight wickets.

Norths strung together a solid innings only to have it dispatched handily by top team Mulgrave Punjabi in a six wicket victory for the latter.

After Norths’ Corey Domic posted a respectable 49 runs to see his side to 159, Mulgrave opener Vikramjeet Singh served an uppercut in the form of 58 runs of his own.

Fellow batter Bhupinder Singh then added on another 37 runs; a handy partnership of Pardeep Mann (21 runs) and Prabhjot Singh Khatara (19 runs) steered the team to the win.

Rovers were unable to chase down a 172-run total set by Mulgrave Piccones, who won by 23 runs.

Third grade (Round 9)

Second-placed Barron pulled off an upset against table-toppers Mareeba with a six-wicket victory.

Barron bowler Sebastian Robson took three wickets for 16 runs to highlight a suffocating innings for Mareeba, who were only able to tally 73 runs.

After taking one wicket for five runs, Barron’s Gerhard Labuschagne struck 43 runs to get his team over the line and put an end to Mareeba’s undefeated season.

Cassowary Coast bowler Austin Stuart had his best innings yet this season taking three wickets for 12 runs in six overs as the Cyclones took care of business against Mulgrave by five wickets.

Mulgrave tailender Chris Reck notched 27 runs to push his team to 100 runs, but it took the Cyclones just 19 overs to scratch together a few runs each and get the victory.

Fourth grade (Round 9)

An 84-run haul from Mulgrave Kerala batsman Shanu Mohanan highlighted a cracking afternoon on the pitch for the team, who defeated Norths by 82 runs.

Mulgrave opener Baisil Paravattil Mathukutty started strong for the side with 28 runs, with Mohanan – who struck 10 fours – and tailender Abhishek Jose Savio (32 runs) piling on the total.

Paravattil Mathukutty then took an impressive four Norths wickets for eight runs in 5.3 overs to have the side clambering for runs.

Barron president Ryan Cherrington belted 42 runs to erase a quality haul from Mareeba’s William Hanlon to nab a seven wicket victory.

Hanlon struck 65 runs to top Mareeba’s 134-run innings, before getting bowled by Barron’s Jordan Massey who took four wickets for 20 runs.

Cherrington’s 42, paired with number three batter Tim Germano’s 41 runs, had Barron balling across the line.

Kobi Johnston hit 51 runs for Atherton to guide them to a 55-run victory.

Fifth grade (Round 9)

Rovers batsman Dayne Margiotta carried his bat with 65 runs, as his squad were able to survive a United surge to win by 19 runs.

United’s opening four batters combined for 95 runs, before the rest of the line up was sent packing for just 26 runs.

Rovers bowler Rohan Handa gave little ground in this regard, tallying three wickets for 25 runs.

A late push from the Cassowary Coast Cyclones and 36 extras saw them to a one-wicket victory over Barron.

Barron’s top four of Kevin Tormey, Daniel Neill, Sooraj Makhija and Patrick Edwards combined for 77 runs, but the side struggled from their to get much on the board.

Cyclones keeper-batsman Machael Zammit then belted 35 runs before Luke Fitzgerald hit a clutch 15 runs at the tail to win.

WEEK NINE

Second Grade (Round 7)

ATHERTON cruised to a six-wicket win against Barron in the battle for second in the Cricket Far North second-grade competition at Crathern Park.

Tablelander Phillip Emerson made quick work of Barron’s top order, taking 3-13.

Desmond Riggs opened for Atherton, belting 41 runs to steer his team past Barron’s 95 run total.

Heath Mallyon took 3-11 from five fine overs for United as a comprehensive batting effort helped his team win by seven wickets against Cassowary Coast.

Cyclones keeper-batsman Michael Zammit managed 45 runs, but three-wicket returns from Mallyon and teammate Josh Barnes meant there was little else to be gained.

United batter Kent Barnes opened with 43 runs for his side as his batting order faced little resistance.

Rovers could only scrape together 42 runs against a devastating Douglas attack to fall by nine wickets. Muddies bowlers Bronson Ryan (3-1), Daniel Twomey (2-16), Daniel Nash (1-19) and Jake Pendlebury (1-5) all showed no mercy in the resounding win.

THERE was no stopping Bhupinder Singh and Mulgrave Punjabi on Sunday, as they belted their way to an 84-run win against Rovers.

Mulgrave opener Vicky Lefty got the ball rolling with 59 runs, before Singh unleashed. He smashed 116 runs – which included 10 boundaries – from 111 balls as the home side reached 236 runs.

Robert Thresher took 3-37 from his seven overs.

Graham Dutton’s late-order 53 not out ensured Rovers closed the gap, but they were dismissed for 152 as Mulgrave’s bowlers dominated.

Barinderjett Jhajj took 4-12 from eight overs, and Ranjodh Singh Yodha had 3-26 from his 7.1 overs.

It took a team effort from Atherton to overcome Norths after an outstanding half-century from Aiden Firman at Griffiths Park.

Firman topscored with a 94-ball 55, as Norths reached 9-127 from their 40 overs.

Atherton’s Lachlan Hollitt proved equally adept, taking 3-26 in eight overs, as Shane Legge (2-14) and Brendan Lynch (2-23) caused plenty of issues with the ball.

Even contributions across the order, led by Hollitt’s 28, allowed the visitors to claim a two-wicket win with more than four overs left.

United’s bowling attack impressed against Mulgrave Piccones, who could only put together a 75-run innings in a seven-wicket loss.

Santinderpal Singh (3-10 from three overs) and Dalbir Singh (3-18) led the way with the ball, as they and Tajinder Singh Manghera (2-17) didn’t allow United’s batsmen any chance to seriously challenge.

Sukh Khinda’s unbeaten 42 led Mulgrave to victory.

Third grade (Round 7)

THIRD-grade leaders Mareeba’s bowlers had a field day against United, limiting the Cairns club to just 76 runs.

Mareeba’s Zak Green took two wickets while yielding just nine runs, with Cian Cochran (2-23), Tyson Brown (2-15), Jett Prien (1-4) and Raymond Watkins (1-24) all pitching in for the six-wicket win.

Brown also guided the team to victory in Mareeba’s innings, leading his side with 30 runs.

Mulgrave had a bye week while data was unavailable for the match between Barron and Cassowary Coast.

Fourth Grade (Round 7)

FOURTH-grade leaders Barron fended off a surging second-placed Mulgrave Kerala to win by 69 runs.

Batters Tim Germano (44 runs), Zebb Moody (26) and Aaron Regan (38) put together solid innings for Barron en route to a 184 run total.

Mulgrave’s batting order had trouble building an traction thanks to the Barron attack, led by Glen Crichton’s 4-20 in seven overs.

Mareeba bowled well in its clash with Douglas, but Muddies’ economical bowlers did better as the northernmost team in the competition earned a 54-run win.

Muddies opener Ethan McCullough smashed 54, as Jake Murphy hit 39.

From there, Mareeba managed to limit Douglas’ run scoring, led by Zac Green (3-35), as Douglas scored 154. Douglas didn’t allow Mareeba’s batsmen anything and dismissed Mareeba for 99.

WEEK EIGHT

First Grade (Round 6)

A mammoth effort from Barron’s first grade middle order guided them to a hard fought three win against Rovers at Crathern Park, but the man at the centre of the fightback lauded the bowling attack as they cemented their place as a contender for Cricket Far North glory.

Barron’s bowling unit sprung out of the gate with four wickets in the first 24 balls to put Rovers on the back foot.

However, Rovers stalwart Josh Chadwick stemmed the tide with 47 runs, followed by crucial knocks from Finn Churchwood and Liam Devietti, who scored 60 and 37 runs respectively as Rovers reached 7-202 from 50 overs.

Barron’s vaunted bowling effort was led by Jordan Fulton at 3-43 in 10 overs as well as Harry Gardner with 2-50 in 10.

Captain Andrew Phelps said a strong opening by the bowlers held the team in good stead the entire afternoon.

“The wicket hardened as the match went on, so getting those early wickets really set us up for the rest of the match,” he said.

The Barron gloveman got the ball rolling for his team partway through their innings with 52 runs, which featured six boundaries and two sixes.

“Winning the toss for this match was really helpful for us,” he said.

“Our bowlers set us up really well too by getting Rovers’ top order out early, even if they ended up fighting back towards the end of the innings.

“Our batting order is really reliable though, we don’t rely on one or two players – our top six or seven batters can step up in any game.”

Joining Phelps was Adam Trewin with 53 runs and Tim Tosh with 38 of his own, as the latter steer Barron to victory with plenty of time to spare.

Tail-ender Sean Prior scored his eight runs from two boundaries to seal the win for Barron to keep them at second on the CFN first grade ladder.

Winning back-to-back games after back-to-back losses has the team reinvigorated, according to Phelps.

“After two losses in a row, we sort of kicked ourselves back into groove,” he said.

“We’ve got a good team, we’re a supportive social group that backs one another up and hopefully we’ll be looking to make a run at the top of the ladder.”

At Griffiths Park, Norths’ top and middle order got the job done in their four-wicket win against Atherton.

Middle order batsman Fred Pittorino led his side with 62 runs including eight fours and a six, while Chris Adams scored 43 atop the order as Atherton set a 222-run target.

Mark Ellis took 4-39 to be Norths’ best with the ball, while Cameron Davis took 2-9.

Norths’ Daniel Freebody struck 57 runs off 106 balls, while Aidan Firman (32 runs) and Linden March (30) led the way in the successful chase.

Atherton’s Lachland Hollitt took 2-30 in 10 overs, and Paul Nasser had 2-31 from nine.

The match between Cassowary Coast and first-placed Mulgrave was washed out.

Second Grade (Round 7)

Third Grade (Round 7)

DANIEL Wicks has produced the best bowling performance of his career for Barron River.

Wicks was unplayable against Mulgrave in the Cricket Far North’s Third Grade clash at Crathern Park on Sunday, ripping through the Toads’ order to finish with 6-8 from just 4.3 overs.

That’s six wickets in 27 balls.

Add in two maiden overs, and Wicks might have just had the best day out for any bowler in any competition this season.

Barron batted first at their home ground, finishing with 128 runs as both teams toughed it out. Lower-order batsman Luke McKinnon topscored with 16 runs, while Barron’s total was boosted by 33 extras, including 26 wides.

Hayden McGregor finished with 3-27 from 6.2 overs, while Harinder Singh had 2-6 from three overs.

The Toads managed just 38 runs in their response, as their innings ended after 15 overs.

In the other game, Cassowary Coast beat United by four wickets. Mareeba had the bye.

Fourth Grade (Round 7)

RAIN and batting prowess resulted in a win to Atherton’s fourth grade team via the Duckworth Lewis method against Barron at Loder Park.

Barron middle-order batter Aaron Regan whacked 44 runs, and he was later joined by Martin Gillard with 34 to add to total of 159 runs.

Atherton’s Gilbert Jansen (22) and Bradley Hunter (24) blasted their team to 1-69 from 10 overs, enough to claim victory with the revised target.

Meanwhile, a bowling onslaught from Mulgrave Kerala steamrolled Mareeba to notch a 48-run victory.

Mulgrave performed admirably in its innings with 20-plus run stints from Baisil Paravattil Mathukutty, Saneeshkumar Santhosh and Sherjin Selvaraj on the way to 104 runs from 31.1 overs.

However, it was with the ball that the team made its mark when Mathukutty took 3-14 from six overs, Mathewkutty George 2-17 from four and Josemon Parakkattil Xavier 2-3 from 2.4 overs.

Fifth Grade (Round 7)

A NINE-boundary showcase from Kent Barnes helped United to a heart-stopping two-wicket win against Douglas Muddies in their fifth-grade clash at Griffiths Park on Sunday.

Muddies set a formidable target of 162 after an outstanding batting display from Keel Sorensen and Simeon Miglioranza, who combined in an unbeaten 156-run second-wicket partnership.

Miglioranza scored 88 with 12 boundaries and two sixes, with Sorensen on 42, as the innings finished after 26 overs.

But United did the job done, thanks to Barnes, the opener steering his side home to victory with two balls left.

Craig Gillard (41) and Patrick Edwards (27) led Barron River to a five-wicket victory against Rovers.

Rovers reached 6-113 from 33 overs, before Gillard and Edwards powered Barron to victory with 14 balls left.

Jimmy Maher Cup Blue (Round 8)

A HALF century from Rhys Johnston set up Atherton for a big 68-run win against Mareeba in the Jimmy Maher Cup Blue clash at Loder Park.

Johnston scored 50 runs, while Isaac Nasser had 46 and Roley Thomas hit an unbeaten 37 as they reached 4-205.

Atherton’s bowlers stifled Mareeba, who batted well but reached 6-137 from 30 overs.

A 35-run innings from Rovers opener Daniel Brennan was the perfect start for their chase against Norths United.  Rovers lost three wickets as they passed Norths’ 79-run total, and went on to make 7-154 from 30 overs.

Tully Mission’s bowlers produced the best team performance of the weekend with the ball, allowing just two runs per over as they dismissed Innisfail for just 41 runs.

Headlined by Dante Van Vuuren’s 2-2, eight different Tully bowlers took wickets.

Opener Jackson Lindsay (35 runs) led the way to get Tully the extra points, as they finished at 4-137 runs.

A low-scoring affair between Mulgrave and Barron ended in a nailbiter, as the Toads earned a last-gasp win on home turf.

Chasing Barron’s 96 runs, tail ender batters Talbot McFarlane and Dexter Barelds scored one run apiece to get the win in the final over.

Jack Porter took a career-best 5-11 for Mulgrave.

Jimmy Maher Cup Gold (Round 8)

ROVERS youngster Henry King fell just short of a dream half century in his side’s 50-run win against Mulgrave in the Jimmy Maher Cup Gold.

King scored 30 of his 48 runs from just seven balls, courtesy of six boundaries and one big six. It helped lift his side to 5-137 from 30 overs.

Jared Caltabiano topscored for Mulgrave with a hard-fought 37, but his side was restricted to 8-87 as six Rovers’ bowlers claimed wickets.

Ladies 30 Overs (Round 6)

WEEK SEVEN

First Grade (Round 5)

A ferocious spell from Mulgrave’s Max Davies-Griffith helped the Toads claim a five-wicket win against Atherton and consolidate their spot on top of the ladder.

The teenage quick returned figures of 5-26 as the Tablelanders crumbled for 95 on Saturday at Minniecon-Gregory Oval.

Atherton opener Dan Parnell was valiant in an unbeaten 64 off 109 balls but got no support from his teammates, with Tom Boorman’s six the next highest on what was a tough day for the visitors.

Justin Reid (34 off 55) and Jake Roach (32 off 31) contributed the bulk of Mulgrave’s run chase, with some late hitting from John Stampa (17 off 12) capping off the win.

A 132-run opening stand between Barron River’s Tim Ward (73 off 91) and Ben Shrimpton (73 off 115) powered the Bulldogs to a big 156-run win over Cassowary Coast at Tully’s Miller Oval.

At Griffiths Park, half-centuries to Nathan Crane (61 off 107) and Bobby Brix (67 off 57) guided Rovers to a six-wicket win over Norths.

Three weeks after toppling ladder-leaders Atherton, United did it again by taking down first-placed Mulgrave Punjabi at Griffiths Park.

United bowler Jatinder Jeetu (4-15) ripped through Mulgrave’s tail to restrict the visitors to 144, before Arjun Maini (46* off 83) and Mandeep Singh (42* off 46) guided the side to a four-wicket win.

Vikramjeet Singh (55 off 64) top scored for Mulgrave, while Bhupinder Singh (22 off 35) also chipped in.

Third Grade (Round 6)

An explosive opening knock from Max Gadd propelled United to a four-wicket win over Mulgrave at the Walker Road Sporting Precinct on Sunday.

Gadd smashed 48 off 26 balls, including eight fours and a six, to get his side off to a strong start before skipper Sanjay Rai (35* off 49) finished off the job.

Mulgrave bowler Mitchell Houghton finished with figures of 5-26 from 7.1 overs.

In the other match, Mareeba made light work of Cassowary Coast, chasing down the Cyclones total of 51 in 12 overs at Innisfail TAFE.

Tidy bowling from the home side’s Ethan Darveniza (1-16) and Arun Singh Mann (2-20) wasn’t enough to stop Mareeba claiming victory.

Zak Green (3-12), Grant Hanlon (3-8) and Cian Cochran (3-7) shared the wickets for Mareeba.

Fourth Grade (Round 6)

A century to Damien Moeser helped Barron River claim a 76-run win and top spot on the ladder in its fourth-grade clash against Norths at Crathern Park.

The opener smashed 108 not out off 117 balls to propel the Bulldogs to an imposing 4/209 after they were sent into bat, before they bowled out Norths for 133 off 31.1 overs.

Moeser led the way in the fourth-grade side’s highest total of the season so far and was supported by Cooper Warry (37 off 53) and Jordan Massey (28 off 20).

Norths were on the back foot early in the chase, losing two wickets in as many overs, before a third fell three overs later to have the visitors reeling at 3/16.

Harry Brooks (56 off 53) got Norths back to 4/93 before he was dismissed, ending Norths’ remote chance of reeling in the Bulldogs’ target.

In the other match, Ethan McCullough’s half-century (57 off 75) was not enough to steer the Douglas Muddies to victory against Mulgrave Kerala.

The Muddies reached 6/164 before Mulgrave put in a strong team batting performance, led by Shanu Mohanan (48 off 27), Sherjin Selvaraj (33 off 53) and Baisil Paravattil Mathukutty (22 off 24), to claim a two-wicket win and maintain third spot on the ladder.

Fifth Grade (Round 5)

Cyclones’ opener Jake Robertson scored 38 off 88 balls to help his the side reach 6/123 before Davinder Kumar ripped through the order to take figures of 4-9 as Rovers fell 58-runs short.

The Muddies chased the Bulldogs’ total down in 20.4 overs to claim a six-wicket win, with Pendlebury (14 off 39) and Ryan (11 off 7) the men in the middle.

Jimmy Maher Cup Gold (Round 7)

A half-ton to Norths United opener Joseph Glover helped the side claim a victory over Mulgrave at Griffiths Park.

Alex Nasser (3-11, 39 runs) was strong for Atherton.

Atherton’s Reece Johnston (20 off 42), Zack Jones (19 off 21) and Roley Thomas (18 off 33) helped the side reach 8/120 against Barron River, before the bowling attack, led by Nathan Daley (2-5) and Brayden Thomson (2-10)

Innisfail’s Matthew Spataro (41 off 69) and Karina Guglielmi (21 off 33) produced decent knocks but it wasn’t enough to defeat ladder-leaders Norths United, who were led by Jaden Bakurski (35 retired not out off 60 balls) and Kalan Wilson (38 retired not out off 47).

A tidy team bowling performance helped Tully Mission restrict Mulgrave to 72 in Mission Beach, before rolling to 3/182 in their 30 overs.

Jack Porter (17 off 53) was the only Mulgrave batsman to score in the double digits, compared to four from Tully Mission – Jackson Lindsay (39* off 45), Dante van Vuuren (33 off 47), Austin Stuart (23 off 17) and Jackson Simpson (10 off 15).

WEEK SIX

First Grade (Round 4)

An emphatic century from Barron River opener Tim Ward was not enough for his side to claim victory over Norths at Crathern Park.

Ward hit the boundary rope on 15 occasions and cleared it on four as he powered his way to 116 runs off 119 balls in one of the knocks of the summer so far.

But it was all in vain as the opener was one of only three Barron River batsmen to score more than nine runs.

Tidy spells from Dilan Jayawardana (4-19) and Linden March (3-31) helped restrict Barron River to 220, before blistering knocks from Angus Warnock (50) and Tom Maher (46*) helped Norths secure victory.

Mulgrave slog merchant Jake Roach backed up a lusty Barrier Reef Big Bash knock with an unbeaten 83 off 68 balls to help the Toads defeat Rovers by eight wickets at Walker Road.

Cassowary Coast had a forgettable outing against Atherton as they were dismissed for 46 to lose by 179 runs.

Brendan Payne scored 45 runs for Mareeba but some tidy bowling from Mulgrave’s Paul Tetley (4-28) put the screws on the home side to keep them to a total of 134.

A scintillating opening spell from Brown, who finished with figures of 5-28, including taking the scalps of the top four Mulgrave batsmen, proved the difference.

Things could have been a lot worse for Mulgrave if Mareeba didn’t concede 35 extras.

In the other match, Barron River’s Gerard Labuschagne scored 55 runs in his side’s eight-wicket win over United. Cassowary Coast had the bye.

Adam Lucas top scored for the Muddies with 45 runs from 34 balls, his dashing late-order innings featuring four boundaries and three big sixes, while Jake Murphy’s 37 and Nicholas Rayner’s 33 helped steer Douglas to a competitive total of 178.

Pendlebury then ripped through the order with ferocity, taking 7-19 from seven spectacular overs as Atherton crumbled for 86.

Elsewhere, William Hanlon’s half century for Mareeba wasn’t enough to steer his team to victory.

Mareeba reached 117, but Tim Germano’s unbeaten 73, which featured 10 boundaries and one six, ensured Barron reached the target in the 19th over for victory.

Fifth grade (Round 3)

Half centuries for Dayne Margiotta and Marcus Carruthers set up Rovers’ seven-wicket victory against United with only two balls to spare in fifth grade.

Both men scored 50, sharing in a 116-run partnership before they were dismissed in quick succession.

Just as United had a sniff of victory, smart batting late-game by Cameron Miller and Michael Patane helped Rovers pass the target.

Robert Salerno topscored for United with 44 runs.

Barron River and Cassowary Coast played out a tie at Crathern Park.

Alexander Jacobson took 6-29 to help limit the Cyclones to 148. Barron started well but lost wickets, and drew level with Cyclones on the last ball.

Douglas defeated Atherton in the other game, with Nicholas Rayner (61, 4-8) the main man for the Muddies.

Jimmy Maher Cup Gold (Round 5)

Mulgrave came close, but a clutch bowling performance from Rovers’ Thomas King kept his team on top in the six-run win at Endeavour Park.

King took four wickets for just 11 runs, including that of Mulgrave’s Kalan Gosper toward the end of the innings to protect Rovers’ 99 run total.

Another nailbiter was had between Atherton and Norths, but it was the former who managed to keep away the latter in the one-run victory.

Norths opener Gareth Thomas got the side off to a hot start with 59 runs, but the tremendous bowling effort from Atherton’s Jack Bombardieri had him taking three wickets for 25 runs, including the final two that sealed his side’s win.

Jimmy Maher Cup Blue (Round 5)

They may be at the bottom of the Jimmy Maher Cup Blue ladder, but Mareeba and Innisfail put together a quality clash with the latter squeezing out a one-run win in the final moments of the round 5 match.

Chasing 127 runs, Innisfail tailender Daniel McAvoy struck five successive runs to push the side over the top in the 29th over.

Mareeba’s innings was plagued by a thrilling effort from Innisfail’s Giacomo De Faveri, who collected five wickets for 10 runs.

In defeat, Mareeba opener Phillip Cleall carried his bat for 60, runs including a smashing 11 fours.

Tully Mission took down Barron by 85 runs while a 69-run day for Rovers’ Daniel Brennan highlighted a 103-run spanking of Mulgrave.

Atherton’s 172 run total was too much for Norths, who lost by 36.
